Fig Jam Date Balls

Fig Jam Date Balls

Dates are traditionally eaten as the first bite to break one’s fast during Ramadan. This year, try serving up these date balls for an elevated twist. These are stuffed with a bite of our fig jam in the middle for an extra-sweet surprise. It’s a lovely way to welcome guests to your home for Iftar - or a great snack to re-energize your day. You could also top a cake or tart (try our fig tart!) with these date balls.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1.5 cups pitted dates
  • ¼ cup nuts (we used walnuts)
  • 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal
  • ~½ cup Dukkan fig jam
  • ½ cup crushed nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts or pistachios) or coconut flakes (to roll in afterward)

Step 1:

Using a small spoon or a teaspoon measuring spoon, scoop out balls of jam and lay them on a sheet pan or plate lined with parchment paper.

Step 2:

Pop the jam balls in the freezer for about a half hour, or until they’ve firmed up. This will make them easier to work with.

Step 3:

Using a blender, blend up the dates, whole nuts and flaxseed meal. Try shaping this mixture - you may need to add a few more dates for it to be sticky and moldable.

Step 4:

Using your hands, mold a piece of the date mixture into a pancake shape.Take a piece of the frozen jam and roll it into a cleaner sphere, and place in the middle.

Step 5:

Using your fingers, lift up and pinch the edges of the date mixture so that they’re coming up around the jam ball. Continue this until the mixture totally encloses the jam and you’ve created a ball. Roll each ball in your hands so that it’s smooth.

Step 6:

You can eat your date balls just like this, or roll them in crushed nuts or coconut flakes. Serve to your Iftar guests as their first bite to break their fast!
